It also identified strategies being used regarding price segmentation and business diversification, and how business diversification relates to production performance. This study examined the characteristics of business models used by wineries in Baja California, Mexico wine route. More emphasis on wastewater irrigation during national resource planning, and inclusion of wastewater as a resource when undertaking water planning could reap rewards in terms of job creation, rural development and economic security in both countries. South Africa, has faced recent severe water droughts that also call for unconventional sources of water for irrigation but as yet has no concrete plans despite having a reg- ulatory framework that promotes water reuse. In particular, Mexico has de nite plans to use reclaimed water in its Guadalupe Valley at a owrate of 1000 litres per second, thus with the potential of becoming the largest place worldwide to use reclaimed water for the vineyards irrigation. It was found that there are no scienti c or legal obstacles to implementing vineyard irrigation with reclaimed water. Recent droughts in both countries have made it imperative to look for new sources of water for irrigation purposes in order to maintain agricultural production. Both are countries denominated new world producers of wine and its economic importance in both regions is evident. The use of untreated or partially treated wastewater for crops irrigation is common practice worldwide, espe- cially in countries that face hydric limitations such as Mexico and South Africa. The study calls for openness on the part of government and wine industry executives toward women’s participation in the development of the region. For researchers and professionals, this study will contribute to knowledge of female participation in this industry, and for wine practitioners, it offers information about women’s performance in this sector. This study also addresses the lack of research regarding female entrepreneurship within the Baja California wine industry. This study allowed us to characterize the inclusion of women in this sector, and was accomplished by analyzing their profile, motivations, and achievements, and the challenges that have shaped their experiences within this cultural industry. ![]() This is a qualitative study, descriptive in scope, that makes use of in-depth interviews focused on women who collaborate in the Baja California wine industry. La cadena muestra que los principales problemas se encuentran en los segmentos relacionados con las endebles infraestructuras productivas, en la falta de proveedores locales de insumos, el intermediarismo en la comercialización y desabasto del producto. A partir de un estudio documental y dos de campo de tipo estadístico descriptivo, se identificaron las capacidades de la empresa y del sector en el cual ésta participa. El objetivo de este trabajo es caracterizar la cadena de valor de las empresas vitivinícolas de Baja California sobre la base de los subsistemas organizacionales: gerencia, mercadeo, calidad, productividad y ambiente. Resumen La cadena de valor se encuentra en el centro de los debates de las políticas económicas en los últimos años debido a la necesidad de incrementarla y cuantificarla. Moreover, investments in human capital are required to train human resources. The analysis shows that the primary issues are related to sectors that have weak productive infrastructure, marketing problems, product shortages and few local suppliers, and additional problems include insufficient funding, water shortages and high taxes. This study presents a comparative analysis between the capabilities of the vitiviniculture industry and sectors within which it participates. Recent economic policy debates have centered on increasing and quantifying the value chain, and the objective of this research is to characterize the value chain of vitiviniculture in Baja California according to organizational subsystems, including management, marketing, quality, productivity and environment.
